The 33rd Ward Progressive Democrats held a Sweet Heart Party fundraiser on Friday, February 22nd where Primary Election candidates rubbed elbows with elected officials, past and present.
The event was held at the Juniata Golf Club. Potential candidates worked the banquet room to gain signatures on their ballot petitions.
The big news in the 7th District Council race last week was the announcement that the Ward Leaders of the 7th District voted to endorse State Rep. Angel Cruz over incumbent City Councilwoman Maria Quinones-Sanchez by 100-53. He plans to officially kick-off his campaign this Friday in Juniata.
Cruz told the Juniata News that he’s honored that the ward leaders respect him enough to give him their endorsement. “There’s a lot of work ahead of us,” he said. Sanchez released a statement saying that she was disappointed, but not surprised that she didn’t receive the endorsement. “Once again, I will pay the price for refusing to play along with the corrupt political establishment in the barrio.”
Donna Aument, 33rd Democratic Ward Leader, is putting her support behind Cruz who canvassed her ward on Saturday.
Numerous Ward Leaders attended the fundraiser, along with State Senators Tina Tartaglione and Sharif Street. Former Congressman Bob Brady was there, as was former Councilman and Juniata native Rick Mariano.
Marnie Aument-Loughrey, who emceed the event, recognized the loss of one of the Ward’s Committeemen, Dennis Lawless. Dennis died of smoke inhalation in a house fire in January. “Dennis grew up in Juniata. He went to North Catholic. He delivered pizzas. He delivered prescriptions for pharmacies,” she said. “No matter what it was, Dennis fought for this community … He stood up for Juniata and he fought for Juniata.” She added “He was one person that you always knew was fighting for his neighborhood because he loved his neighborhood.”
The Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, May 21st. Last day to register to vote is April 22.
