Port Richmond mourns a young man’s life taken too soon

Family and friends release balloons in memory of Anthony Cheever

The seemingly ever-increasing amount of violence has hit home hard for the community of Port Richmond. On Wednesday, June 12th, 19 year-old Anthony Cheever was with a 16 year-old friend in Campbell Square at around 10:00 pm when a group of kids arrived, shooting Anthony in the chest and his friend in the leg. Anthony died a short time later at the hospital. His friend is recovering.

Authorities say that the shooting may have stemmed from an argument that occurred earlier in the day.

Family and friends gathered on Friday morning, June 14th at the Wawa, Richmond Street & Allegheny Avenue, where Anthony was employed. They wrote messages in memory of the young man on balloons. Just as a call was made to release the balloons, a strong gust of wind came in, carrying the balloons quickly into the sky.

In social media posts, Anthony’s mother Jaime Smith called for peace, asking that there be no retaliation, but looking for answers to the senseless act.

Rev. James Olson has sent out a notice that a candlelight vigil will take place tonight, Sunday, June 16th in the park at Campbell Square at 6:00 pm, in response to Anthony’s murder.

“Fr. Chiriaco will take the 6:00 PM Mass at St. George on Sunday so that I can be present at the candlelight vigil and offer some prayer”, wrote Fr. Olson. “It is an opportunity for us to be present to those who are suffering and grieving. It is also an opportunity for us to bring the light of faith to the situation.”

He added “With that in mind, we are going to move the rosary on Sunday to Nativity BVM Church. This will enable us to invite those who are at the candlelight vigil to join us in praying the rosary in Church. I believe that as a community we will be able to respond better to things like this if faith is more prominent in the community. “

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday evening, June 18th.
