The neighborhood known for its fighting spirit is welcoming a new boxing gym this week. The K&A Boxing Club is located across from McPherson Square at the corner of F & Potter Streets, the site of the former Kendrick Nightclub, which also served as an Evangelical Church in recent years.
Head trainer, Navy veteran, and Edison grad Timmy Sinese had planned to open the gym last fall, but those plans came to a grinding halt due to Covid and the resulting shutdowns.
“Anyone who thinks running a gym is easy, never ran a gym!” said Sinese.
The gym will focus on youth boxing, but all ages and levels will be encouraged to train there.
“Our aim is to keep the kids off the streets and in the gym,” he added.
A fundraising event will be held this Saturday May 1st at Westy’s Bar, 1440 Callowhill Street at 7 pm, and is expected to draw many professional boxers from Kensington’s storied pugilist history.
“I know Covid has hurt most financially, but what Timmy Sinese and his crew are doing for our youth is much needed,” posted supporter Mark Lavelle. “If you can attend, donate a basket or whatever you can do is greatly appreciated, Covid may have hurt our pockets but not our hearts, thank you K & A boxing for your continued effort to help our youth.”
Fran Kubach, of Front Street Gym, added “Timmy’s doing this to help raise funds for the kids he coaches and allow them to travel to compete. Timmy is an amazing coach and amazing guy. Anyone that has any type of interest in boxing should go check out this fundraiser, it’ll be filled with a bunch of solid Philly boxers. Even if you aren’t interested in boxing, there’s gonna be raffles, so go win something while helping out an upcoming gym and great coach.”
For those who cannot attend but still wish to contribute, a GoFundMe has been set up HERE. K&A Boxing is a registered 501(c)3.
